ADAS Market Set for Prosperity in Future
The installation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) has surged in recent years due to technological advancements on account of the increasing focus on comfort and safety features in vehicles. The improvement in sensor technologies has led to the development of electronic equipment that is integral to electric vehicles (EVs) and connected cars. Automobile manufacturers are introducing parking aid systems and adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems to offer comfort to drivers. In this regard, the rising government regulations and initiatives regarding vehicle safety are fueling the adoption of ADAS. In recent years, many developed countries have mandated the installation of ADAS solutions to enhance the safety quotient of automobiles. For instance, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) issued by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandate that automobile and equipment producers must comply with vehicle safety standards. Owing to this, the ADAS market will witness unprecedented growth in the near future.
ADAS comprises drowsiness monitoring system (DMS), park assist, ACC, blind-spot detection system (BSDS), lane departure warning system (LDWS), tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), adaptive front lighting system (AFLS), night vision system, and driver monitoring system. Among these systems, automobile manufacturers will increasingly install TPMS due to the stringent regulations in Europe that mandate its incorporation. All these ADAS systems work with the help of ultrasonic, infrared, radar, image, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and laser sensors.
Apart from the increasing focus on road and vehicle safety, the adoption of these ADAS components is exponentially growing due to the escalating demand for semi-autonomous vehicles. In the last few years, automobile manufacturers have installed the largest number of ADAS sensors in level 1 semi-autonomous vehicles due to the stringent government norms on road safety. To achieve level 1 automation, the vehicle should be equipped with electronic stability control (ESC) or one of the other ADAS solutions for steering or acceleration. Currently, a large number of the passenger cars on the roads today are semi-autonomous, as the mandatory adoption of ESC automatically gives them level 1 autonomy.
